Transformer Explosion, MVA, Ekastown Rd

02:19: Station 15 dispatched for a pole fire from a transformer explosion near 941 Ekastown Road in Clinton Township. Unknown if wires are involved as of dispatch.

02:25: Station 15 acknowledges the call.

02:27: Freeport 70-3 is advising Control they are on scene of an MVA on Route 228 just east of the Saxonburg circle; there are unknown injuries but they are unable to confirm if there is entrapment. Safety 15 states this is probably going to be the first call for the transformer and requests Control re-trip it as an MVA.

02:29: Stations 15 and 45 are now alerted for an MVA with unknown injuries.

02:30: Freeport 70-3 states they have a truck rolled over onto its roof on some type of natural gas line or meter and requests People’s Gas respond. They are across from 948 Ekastown.

02:31: Rescue 15 is en route. Safety 15 is now on scene with 70-3.

02:32: Safety 15 is reporting a pole down as well. Control is asking which power company but Safety 15 is unable to confirm at this time as the pole is sheared off.

02:33: Rescue 15 is in the roundabout; Safety 15 states they will get to the vehicle first, he is stopped ~100′ back to investigate the wires.

02:34: 70-3 is advising 45-1 they have a passenger denying injury and a female driver left on foot prior to EMS arrival. 45-1 is now reporting en route.

02:35: Rescue 15 is on scene.

02:37: Command is stating they will need Armstrong Utilities and Consolidated, they have wires on the pole involved and there is a transformer on the ground. The road will be closed. Control states West Penn Power and People’s Gas have both been notified but neither provided an ETA.

02:38: Safety 15 is alerting 45-1 to be careful of the sheared pole and wires under high tension.

02:40: An unidentified unit is going to pick up road barriers and is instructing another person to not let any traffic through.

02:41: Engine 15 is responding; they are instructed to assist with the road closure.

02:45: Ekastown Command is asking Control to advise People’s Gas the vehicle is on top of their meter; Control states “they were already advised.”

02:47: Engine 15 is on scene.

02:49: E-15 is advising Chief 15 they are in front of Armstrong Farms but is asking Command if they should shut the road down at the roundabout; the reply is affirmative.

02:53: E-15 is advising they are at the roundabout but there was a tractor-trailer that went through they were unable to stop.

02:56: Traffic controllers are going to send the tractor-trailer through slowly and hugging the right side of the road and state this should be the last one as the road block is in place now.

03:02: Command is stating they will be able to run one-lane traffic now and they are going to reopen the roundabout.

03:11: Freeport 70-3 is clear of the incident.

03:29: A traffic controller is stating they have a tractor-trailer to come through; he is advised the tow trucks are on scene so to send the truck slowly. The Rescue and the ambulance are possibly preparing to depart at this time as well.

03:31: The tow truck(s) is/are reportedly sideways and blocking the roadway at this moment.

03:35: Fire Police are instructed to hold all traffic, the roadway is shut down.

03:36: The crew from People’s Gas is reportedly inbound to the scene now.

04:13: West Penn Power is now arriving on scene.

04:21: Fire Police are instructed to reopen 1 lane at this time.

04:22: An unidentified unit, possibly Command, is stating they are going to finish clearing up the roadway, move through the traffic backlog, then start clearing fire apparatus.

04:26: Chief 15 is advising Safety 15 they can start heading back to station, they’ll be clear shortly; Safety 15 asks if they’re to reopen the road completely and Chief 15 replies affirmatively.

04:35: 45-1 is back in service; there was no patient update or transport.

04:48: All Station 15 units are now reported clear of the scene.
