Fatal MVA: S. Pike Road @ Younkins Road

14:50: Stations 27, 36, and 70 (EMS) dispatched for an MVA with possible entrapment involving 2 or 3 vehicles, still on the roadway, and one male possibly unconscious, at the intersection of South Pike Road at Younkins Road in Buffalo Township.

14:51: Station 36 has the call.

14:52: All units are advised that an additional caller reports the male is possibly not breathing and is entrapped underneath a seat. The vehicle is also smoking. Chief 27-2, 70-4, and 70-3 are all en route at this time. Station 27 acknowledges the call. Aircraft on standby to Freeport HS if available.

14:53: 70-3 is checking for updates as they did not copy the prior update; they’re now requesting a helicopter in the air if available. Control is asking for the landing zone; C-27-2 is advising them to use Freeport High School. Chief 70 advises 70-1 is now responding. 70-3 states air medical can stand by at this time.

14:54: Rescue 27 is en route; Control states police want Route 356 shut down at the Parker Road intersection and at Giant Eagle.

14:55: Rescue 36 is en route.

14:56: RQ-27 is asking to confirm what PD wanted as far as traffic control but is also asking if they confirmed no entrapment. Control states PD did not make a report about entrapment either way. Fire units will proceed in to check entrapment before handling the road closure.

14:57: Control is now relaying that police have reported 2 occupants are entrapped. C-27-2 is arriving on scene with a head-on-style collision, investigating.

14:58: RQ-27 is on scene. Command is now requesting a helicopter in the air, but Control advises he’s still trying to get one. Engine 27 and Brush 36 are en route.

14:59: BR-36 is to proceed to the HS to establish a landing zone. Control advises Stat MedEvac 15 will be there in 10 minutes. Command is now requesting a 2nd helicopter in the air to the scene (this will be the 3rd medical helicopter airborne for Butler County at this time — including the one for Connoquenessing Twp).

15:00: RQ-36 is to position near the 3rd ambulance on location and assist with extrication.

15:01: There was some confusion about the helicopters due to the medical incident in Connoquenessing, but Command here advises the 2nd aircraft for this incident can remain on standby only at this time. RQ-36 is on scene. EN-27 is to shut down S. Pike Rd @ Parker Rd.

15:02: Control advises that LifeFlight has a bird on standby for this incident with an ETA of 10 minutes, if needed. EN-27 is now instructed to proceed to the scene while the Squad handles the road closure. BR-36 is out at the High School for the LZ.

15:03: Command is requesting a 4th EMS unit to the scene for an evaluation; Control is attempting to first check with Cmdr-70 for further clarification with no response. EN-27 is being instructed to handle fire suppression duty and to pull a bumper line for standby.

15:04: Station 45 is being added to the call; they acknowledge — 45-1 will handle the call.

15:05: With 45-1 having acknowledged but not yet en route, EMS Command on scene (C-70) wants Medic 270 started to the scene; they have 1 patient in working arrest, another for evaluation, and another being extricated now.

15:06: Command requests Station 70 (FD) respond to shut down S Pike Rd @ Cole Rd.

15:08: Control was tied up with other tasks and radio traffic and didn’t copy the request for Station 70; Command is now requesting them to shut it down at Bear Creek, instead. SQ-27 is being directed to handle the closure at Parker Rd.

15:11: Brush-27 is responding. Stat 16 is on the ground at the HS.

15:12: BR-27 is to shut down S Pike @ Bear Creek.

15:13: EN-27 is advising Command there will be no way for 45-1 to get past him or the commercial tanker truck that was (possibly) involved.

15:15: Medic 273 is responding. 45-1 is on scene.

15:17: The LZ crew is advising Command they’re set up in the practice field along Rt 356 and they’re asking if the flight crew is needed to the scene with no immediate response.

15:18: 70-4 is transporting a patient to the LZ.

15:19: Control advises there has been no response from Freeport Station 70, but Command states they have a unit headed to the intersection already. 70-3 is reporting one occupant Code Zero (this is an out-of-county term for the termination of care due to cardiac arrest).

15:20: 70-4 is out at the LZ with Stat 8; per Command, the 2nd helicopter can stand down.

15:21: Command reports S. Pike will be shut down from Parker Rd to Bear Creek Rd for an extended period of time.

15:23: Utility-70 is responding; they are being instructed to go to the intersection of Bear Creek Rd @ Younkins to close off Younkins.

15:27: Medic 273 is to come past the line of northbound traffic and park in front of one of the ambulances.

15:29: UT-70 is on location. Medic 273 is being instructed to assist 70-3 with their patient.

15:32: 70-4 reports Stat 8 is airborne to Presby.

15:39: BR-36 is clear of the LZ, responding to the scene to assist with traffic control.

15:44: UT-70 is clearing the incident; they’ve been relieved by BR-36.

15:47: 45-1 is transporting a patient to Allegheny General Hospital.

15:53: 70-4 is clear of the scene, remaining out of service at this time.

15:59: 70-1 is back in service, clear from the scene.

16:23: 45-1 is out at AGH.

16:44: EN-27 is back in service. The road remains closed.

18:26: RQ-36 is clear and in service. The road remains closed.

20:14: Incident terminated; all remaining units are clear and Command reports South Pike Road has fully reopened.
