Fatal Overnight Crash: Route 422

01:14: Stations 13, 24 and 99 dispatched for a 2-vehicle MVA with unknown injuries on New Castle Road near Unionville Road in Franklin Township.

01:15: 99-5 is assigned.

01:16: Lieutenant 13-3 acknowledges the call. Control states an additional caller reports it is a minivan and a sedan in a head-on collision with 1 individual unresponsive.

01:17: 99-2 is also responding. Station 24 acknowledges the call.

01:18: Chief 13-2 is en route to his station. Control is restating the previous update and C-13-2 is now requesting the availability of air medical.

01:20: Engine 13 and Rescue 24 are responding.

01:21: Control is advising EN-13 this will between Unionville and Fairground Market based on all of the calls coming in, possibly just west of Stephenson’s.

01:22: EN-13 is on scene with 2 vehicles in the middle of the roadway.

01:24: Command is asking for Station 14 for traffic control. Control states both air services declined due to weather. Station 14 is alerted. 99-5 is approaching from Dick Road.

01:25: EMS is to pull in behind EN-13; they’re advised there is a female complaining of neck pain. They are asking if more than one ambulance will be needed and is advised negative. 99-2 is back in service.

01:26: Station 14 acknowledges the call.

01:27: RQ-24 is approaching and is advised negative entrapment; they are to setup at the intersection of 422 and 528 and shutdown all traffic on 422.

01:28: FP-Cap-13 is being instructed to shutdown 422 at Prospect Main Street, near the old bank. Command is asking Control to notify PennDOT that they will be on scene for an extended period.

01:29: RQ-24 is on location to close the roadway.

01:30: Station 14 is requesting a re-trip of their tones for a driver.

01:34: Utility 14 is responding.

01:39: Command is asking RQ-24 if they have New Castle Road shutdown at this time. RQ-24 states the truck is parked at the off-ramp and cones and flares are being setup at the on-ramp. Command states he is sending BR-13 to assist with traffic; once the brush gets there, the Rescue can respond to the scene for possible extrication assistance.

01:40: UT-14 is on location and is instructed to close the intersection completely.

01:51: BR-13 is advising Command that the sister of the female in the involved vehicle is approaching the scene now.

01:53: RQ-24 is being instructed to stage across the roadway.

01:58: 99-5 is transporting to Allegheny General Hospital.

02:11: Command is advising BR-13 that a PennDOT crew is coming to relieve them and they can proceed to the scene once that crew arrives.

02:29: UT-14 is advised that once FP-Cap-13 is setup at his new location, they can return in service.

02:32: UT-14 is now reporting clear.

02:38: BR-13 is advising Command that a KDKA news crew is at the traffic control point and is asking if they can come up to the scene. Command states “negative.”

02:43: 99-5 is out at AGH.

02:57: PennDOT is reportedly setting up now.

02:58: Command is instructing BR-13 to come up in the eastbound lane after they are relieved, just past Kwik Fill, and setup closure signs for anyone that might come out of there or Fairground Market.

02:59: Traffic controllers are reporting the media is setting up just beyond the roadblock and Command states that’s fine, just to advise them not to come anywhere past the roadblock.

03:42: Traffic controllers state a representative from Sheetz is asking how they can get trucks into a storage lot nearby. They’re going to be sent down 488 onto Unionville.

05:04: RQ-24 is clear of the scene. Someone is asking where the wrecker is wanted and is told to stage out of the way until they’re ready for it.

05:57: Command is terminated; Station 13 units are back in service. PennDOT crews still have 422 shutdown at this time.
